Remote traffic management and road safety cameras have enjoyed significant growth over the last ten years as a result of the benefits seen in improved road user safety combined with reduced injuries on busy roads, intersections and accident 'block-spots'. The original film cameras are now being replaced by fully automated digital camera systems which record both 'still' and video images for traffic enforcement. These digital systems require significantly less maintenance and can instantly relay violation information over a GSM/3G wireless network link directly to the service operator. Newer systems now use two cameras combined with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) techniques to implement an average speed measuring system over a set road distance.
