Developing an Airborne Mission Streamer in the Nick of Time

Airborne Mission Streamer

Mission-critical applications such as surveillance and reconnaissance require rugged and reliable functionality. Intended for embedded video systems that meet the extremely harsh environments of military applications where size, weight, and power (SWaP) are critical, AMP’s mission streamer enables fast deployment with reduced development time and costs.

The streamer hardware is configured for an airborne application that has three HD-SDI sensors/cameras.

The streamer captures and encodes the 3x HD-SDI inputs capturing video and the embedded KLV metadata in the HD-SDI stream coming from the aircraft sensor pod, doing HW H.264 video encoding, and then multiplexing the video and KLV metadata into the output data streams. The data streams are available over GigaBit Ethernet which can be routed through application-specific networking.

At the client end, the ultra-low latency streamer is connected to the application-specific network infrastructure via its Gigabit Ethernet port. The client receives, decodes, and displays the 3 channels on its HDMI output. KLV metadata embedded in the data streams can be used to update the aircraft HUD to provide a near-live monitoring system for the vehicle in flight.
